SC Upholds Gagan Thapa’s Release

Kathmandu, Dec 12-The Supreme Court today upheld the Special Court order issued on August 14 to free NSU leader Gagan Thapa, saying that there was no need to detain the former president of Nepal Student Union on a sedition case pending at the Special Court.

A single bench of justice Min Bahadur Rayamajhi issued the order upholding the Special Court order. The bench observed that since the Special Court order does not have any legal error there was no need to go against it.

The bench also ordered to proceed the case against him as per law. The government had moved the apex court two weeks after the Special Court released Thapa on August 14. The government had sought the apex court order to keep him in detention.

The government had filed a case against the student leader accusing him of shouting slogans against the monarch and the royal family.
