PIL filed

Kathmandu, Jan 3- A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was on monday filed in the Supreme Court seeking compensation for possible injuries candidates and voters might sustain while taking part in the municipal elections scheduled for February 8.

A Kathmandu resident Bijendra Lal Joshi filed the PIL making the Office of the Prime Minister and Cabinet, Ministries of Home and Local Development and the Election Commission as the defendants.

According to the petitioner, the government has declared compensation of up to Rs 5 to 7 lakh if any official or security person loses his/her life while on duty during the elections.

The petitioner said Article 11 of the Constitution guarantees the right to equality and it is risky to take part in the municipal elections. “The government must assure the candidates and the voters of the compensation along with officials and security persons,” he demanded.
