Constitution Day will not be celebrated
As the country is moving ahead to promulgate a new interim constitution by November 26, the existing Constitution of 1990 is seemingly witnessing its last anniversary albeit without any fanfare or celebrations.

The government has already cancelled the official observance of Constitution Day – which used to be held every year on Kartik 23 (November 9 this year).

The government has also cancelled this day as a public holiday. In the past years, this day used to be celebrated by the government as well as civil society organizations by organizing interactions on constitutionalism.

However, following the successful April uprising and the popular demand for holding Constituent Assembly to write a new constitution, the 1990 Constitution has been losing its significance even though officially it is still operational. The 1990 Constitution was a product of historic People's Movement of 1990, which restored democracy by replacing autocratic Panchayat system.
