Case filed against Dhungana and others

Kathmandu, March 2 - Nepal police Tuesday filed a case against police inspector Suresh Dhungana, sub-inspector Kiran Joshi, mountaineer Pemba Dorje Sherpa, RNA soldier Bal Kumar Luintel and Nar Bahadur Siwakoti in connection with an abduction and extortion of Rs 1.1 million that took place on January 29.

Issuing a statement, Police Headquarters has said that preliminary investigations showed the involvement of the five in the crime. Kantipur daily had first exposed the misdeed that took place under the very nose of Inspector General of Police, Shyam Bhakta Thapa.

Similarly, the statement says that the kin of two individuals killed by a police vehicle in Saptari two and half months ago were given Rs 160,000 in compensation last month.

Tul Bahadur Gurung, driver of the vehicle, is out on bail. But the hearing in the case is continuing at Saptari district court.

In the statement, police spokesperson, Senior Superintendent of Police Ramesh Chand, expressed concern over reports in the media that "have tried to taint the whole institution" over the misconduct of a few officers.
