Produce Arrested Lawyers, SC Tells Govt
Kathmandu, April 5-The Supreme Court today ordered the government to produce 13 lawyers who were arrested from a demonstration this morning before the court at 12:00 noon on Friday.The order from a bench of justice Tahir Ali Ansawari came in response to a habeas corpus petition was filed in the Court seeking its order to government to release the 13 lawyers.
The 13 lawyers were arrested from a peaceful demonstration called by the alliance of various professional bodies at New Baneshwor this morning.The lawyers including NBA chairman Shambhu Thapa, general secretary Madhav Baskota were among the 36 professionals arrested from the demonstration, which was scheduled to defy the prohibitory orders to hold demonstrations within the Ring Road.
Earlier today, Nepal Bar Association decided to boycott today’s court businesses, including the Supreme Court, in the Kathmandu valley, except habeas corpus petitions to protest the police intervention and arrest of lawyers from the pro-democracy rally.This is the first time that the lawyers have announced to boycott the court business after the restoration of democracy in Nepal in 1990.
