NBA criticised prohibitory orders

Kathmandu, Jan 18-The Nepal Bar Association has criticised the government ban. The lawyers’ body said the move was against the freedom of political parties and against constitutional provisions. The NBA also said the government has violated the fundamental rights of the people and the rights of the political parties. A statement issued by the NBA added that the citizens were not expected to follow such an autocratic order of the government.

Same as A United Nations human rights group today criticised the government ban in a statement, saying the restrictions “represent an extreme limitation on the right to freedom of peaceful assembly.” “We urge the government to maintain the maximum freedom of peaceful assembly consistent with legitimate security considerations, and we call on those who organise or participate in demonstrations and rallies to act peacefully at all times,” said Ian Martin, representative of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal.

His office said it “deplored the loss of life” since the end of a four-month unilateral Maoist ceasefire earlier this month, but Monday’s government restrictions “represent an extreme limitation on the right to freedom of peaceful assembly.”
