SC Orders Magar’s Release

Kathmandu Dec 5-A joint bench of justices Anup Raj Sharma and Damodar Prasad Sharma ordered the government to release Maoist student wing leader Bina Magar, saying she was detained illegally.

The SC had already ordered the government to release Magar on June 5. However, the security personnel kept her in detention defying the court order

The security personnel, both in uniform and plainclothes, were still at the Supreme Court (SC) till late in the evening on Sunday in a bid to re-arrest the Maoist student wing leader Bina Magar even after the SC ordered her release earlier on the day.

Kathmandu District President of ANNISU-Revolutionary Magar couldn’t leave the court premises till late in the evening today, fearing her possible re-arrest like another Revolutionary leader Krishna KC, who still faces murder charges at the Appellate Court even after the SC ordered his release on September 22.

The government charged KC along with Maoist top leaders Pranchanda, Baburam Bhattarai, Matrika Yadav and Suresh Alemagar with murdering Sanjay Singh Dangol, security guard of American Embassy at Kirtipur in 2004.

The representatives of the National Human Rights Commission and UN rights body were also at the court premises to prevent the possible re-arrest of Magar who was arrested on October 20, 2003 from Kathmandu.
