Kathmandu, September 5

Student leader charged
The government prosecutor on Sunday filed a charge sheet at the Special Court against a student leader of the Nepal Communist Party (UML) affiliated ANNFSU, Govinda Nepali, in a sedition case. Nepali is the president of the Baglung Multiple Campus unit. The Office of the Kathmandu District Government Attorneys filed the case against him accusing him of violating Clause 4(1) of Offences Against State Act 1989. The prosecutor also sought a three-year jail term or a fine of Rs 3,000 or both against him as he allegedly violated the Act by chanting objectionable slogans against the King and members of the Royal family. For some weeks, he is under police detention to investigate the case against him.

‘People’s supremacy must’

President of the Nepal Bar Association Shambhu Thapa said people’s supremacy should be a must to achieve sustainable peace in the country. Speaking at an interaction organised by the Professional Alliance for Peace and Democracy (PAPAD), he said: “People’s supremacy should be the main agenda while putting civic pressure on the state to restore democratic process.” PAPAD chairman Dr Sudha Sharma, who is also the president of the Nepal Medical Association, said the alliance has sentimental attachment with the movement launched by the political parties to restore democracy in the country. She said the alliance will soon hold a peace rally. President of the Nepal Teachers’ Union Keshav Bhattarai said PAPAD had a tough job to play at a time when the state power, politics, beliefs and assumptions are fluid.
