Discretion root of graft: CIAA chief
The chief commissioner of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA), Surya Nath Upadhayay, has said that the discretionary powers enjoyed by government officials should be curtailed to control corruption and other irregularities. Demanding that such powers be curtailed to check corruption, Upadhayay said: “Transparency in decision-making processes can also help check corruption and other irregularities.” Upadhayay was speaking at the inaugural session of a week-long workshop on Investigative Journalism and Corruption Control. “The press and the CIAA have been fighting for good governance,” he said, adding: “Since controlling corruption is our common goal, we should fight corruption together.”
Tainted officer’s case
The Royal Commission for Corruption Control (RCCC) recorded statements of Bamdev Dip Adhikari, the survey officer of the Land Management Training Centre, Dhulikhel, who has been indicted for amassing property through illegal means, at the RCCC office, on Friday. Accusing Adhikari of amassing about Rs 5.9 million by abusing authority, the RCCC had filed a case against him.
Women’s rights
The Chief Justice, Dilip Kumar Paudel, has said the Supreme Court is committed to protecting the rights of women. He made this remark while inaugurating a workshop on Legal Protection of Women, which was organised here on Friday to mark the silver jubilee of the Dillibazaar Girls’ Multiple Campus.
