Nowak meets CJ

Kathmandu, Sept. 12-The United Nations Special Rapporter on Torture, Manfred Nowak, held separate meetings Sunday with Chief Justice (CJ) Dilip Kumar Poudel and officials of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
During the visit Manfred gathered information about the writ petition of habeas corpus during the current fiscal year 2005 and expressed satisfaction that there were low number of re-arrests in Nepal.One hundred and seventy five people had been released out of 304 petitions filed at the Court. Talking to media persons, registrar Dr. Ramkrishna Timilsena said that the SC was always committed to safeguard the rights of the individuals.
Nowak expressed concern on the role of the SC regarding habeas corpus petitions. He also gathered information about the writ petition of habeas corpus during this year. A total of 175 people had been released out of 304 petitions filed at the court, reports said.
Nowak arrived on Saturday on a fact-finding mission regarding the rule of law in Nepal.
