'Judges' role crucial in protecting rights

Kathmandu, Nov 19 - Though the constitution has entrusted the judiciary with responsibility to protect peoples' rights, the role of judges involved in justice delivery is equally important in this regard, said Supreme Court justice Kedar Prasad Giri on Friday.

Speaking at an interaction organized by the Judiciary Service Commission (JSC) in Birgunj, Giri also said justice delivery would be affected by the conduct of government lawyers, law professionals and civil society members.

Asking all judges to abide by the norms and values of justice delivery, he said, "It is essential to develop the capacity of all those involved to move forward on the path of justice, keeping the interest of people at the centre."

Giri was one of the justices on the three-member special bench of the Supreme Court that refused to issue an interim order on the media ordinance and the midnight seizure of uplinking equipment from Kantipur FM at gun point.
