UN Committee against Torture worried over HR

Kathmandu, Nov 17 - The United Nations Committee against Torture (CAT) expressed serious concern over the enforced disappearances and the trend of systematic and widespread torture in Nepal.

According to a press statement, issued by World Organization Against Torture and received here Wednesday, the CAT delegation, in its recent visit to Nepal, also raised the question of access to the places of detention and of a victim's access to justice.

It was worried by the current situation in Nepal where the parliament is not functioning and tried to find out the impact of this on the overall situation of human rights in the country, the statement said.

In the meantime Human Rights Treaty Monitoring Coordination Committee (HRTMCC) together with the Geneva based NGO, World Organization Against Torture (OMCT), submitted a shadow report on rights violations in Nepal between 1992 and 2004.
