Lawyers organize sit-in at SC premises

Kathmandu, Nov 13-Lawyers organized an hour long sit-in program at the Supreme Court (SC) premises protesting SC’s refusal to issue an interim order halting implementation of controversial Media Ordinance that puts fresh curbs on Media sector.

Around 200 lawyers held a sit-in protest wearing black armbands at the Supreme Court premises today from 1-2 pm, protesting against the recent SC decision not to issue a stay order against the controversial media ordinance and its decision against Kantipur FM.

The Nepal Bar Association (NBA) announced protest against the SC’s decision saying the decision was against Constitution of the Kingdom of Nepal 1990. The NBA had also decided to boycott the bench on 16th November.

Talking to journalists After the programme NBA president Shambhu Thapa said the protest was aimed not against the judiciary but the judges who were involved in the SC decision on November 11. He also sought the apex court help in protecting peoples’ rights.

A special bench of the SC comprising Chief Justice Dilip Kumar Poudel and Justices Kedar Giri and Sharada Prasad Pandit refused to block the media ordinance introduced by the government last month
