Tortured in custody

Itahari Nov 2 - Family members of Krishna Gopal Ghimire, who was arrested by security forces five days ago from Itahari in Sunsari district, have claimed that Ghimire was severely tortured while in custody.

"I was severely tortured in the army barrack and I barely managed to escape death," Rama Ghimire, daughter of the detainee quoted her father as saying. Rama, a grade 10 student, was allowed to meet her father after human rights organizations and civil society appealed to the government to make public the whereabouts of Ghimire. Rama also said that her mother Kamala Ghimire had not been allowed to meet her husband and was mentally distressed after the arrest of her husband.

"He was arrested by the army, so we have no idea about the case," Kamala quoted the police as saying when she inquired about the reason behind the arrest. She also said that she would move the court if he was not released immediately.

Though security forces initially denied having arrested Ghimire, on Monday they conceded they had detained Ghimire for 'general inquiry', family members said.

Meanwhile, issuing a press statement, Amnesty International has expressed concern over Ghimire's safety. It has called on the authorities to immediately and unconditionally release him "unless he is to be charged with a recognizable criminal offence".
